The Hydrogen Bomb :: World War II History

The Hydrogen conk outThesis Statement The henry bomb is a nuclear mechanism in which light atomic nuclei of hydrogen ar joined together in an uncontrolled nuclear fusion reaction to release tremendous amounts of energy. The hydrogen bomb is about a thousand times as powerful as the atomic bomb, which produces a nuclear fission explosion about a million times more powerful than comparably sized bombs using conventional high explosives such as TNT.The Hydrogen Bomb The Atomic Bomb Was A Essential First Step toward the Development of the Hydrogen Bomb, Before the atomic bomb was developed by the united states during World War II, there was no way to produce the extreme amounts of heat needed to initiate the fusion reaction of the hydrogen bomb. Even after World War II, the hydrogen bomb faced many political and technical obstacles. The U.S. government gave priority to perfecting and stockpiling atomic bombs, and scientist discovered that initiating a fusion reaction was more than exclusively placing a container of hydrogen near a fission trigger.Tension to develop the hydrogen bomb increased in the United States after the Soviet fusion set off its first atomic bomb in August 1949. The Military, the joint congressional committee on Atomic Energy, and several noned physicists, including Edward storyteller And Ernest Lawrence, called for creation of a so-called super bomb, but the General Advisory of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC), chaired by J. Robert Oppenheimer, in agreement recommended that the bomb should not be developed, because of the technical difficulties involved, the need to enlarge the Atomic Bomb reserve, and because of moral considerations. A Majority of the AEC supported this decision and passed their recommendation on to President nark S. Truman. A National Security Council report recommend otherwise, however and at the end of January 1950, Truman ordered that the United States should investigate the possibility of producing hydrogen b ombs. Edward Teller was hardened in charge of the investigation. The decision to move ahead with the Hydrogen bomb development was made in response to U.S. perceptions that the USSR was close to producing its own Hydrogen Bomb. thermonuclear devices were tested was to begin in 1952, and by 1954, both the United States And The USSR have achieved Hydrogen Bomb capability. Since That Year each side has developed nuclear arsenals that are almost entirely composed of fusion weapons, rather than fission weapons. They have reached a strategic condition that promises total destruction.

Consequences of Exploration for Europeans and the Indigenous Peoples Essay

In 1492, Christopher Columbus landed in the Caribbean bearing the name of the Spanish Crown in hopes that he had landed in the Indies of Asia using a direct sea route. Though that is not where he landed, his New World was a place of great wealth, virgin materials and crops, unexampled source of labor, and new land for the European nations. The consequences for the native people of the the Statess were much worse with devastating death tolls, enslavement, new diseases and racist attitudes towards them. Though it would not be fair to say that the Europeans did not sh ar in forbid consequences or that the indigenous people did not gain any advantages. The greatest negative consequences for the Europeans due to the European expansion are a devastating economic revolution, and the introduction of the venereal disease Syphilis. Once the Spanish began to mine the precious ores of America the wealth of Spain underwent a major transformation. Demanding one-fifth of all profit, the Crown be came immensely rich and this showed in their influence on the rest of Europe, seeing that other countries in a flash lacked the material wealth of Spain. Throughout this time of great wealth the population rose steadily in Spain. With population increase, came an increased demand for food and merchandise.Spain had expelled a large amount of their skilled farmers, workers, merchants and businessmen during the Inquisition when they cleansed their country of the Jewish and Muslim people. Along with the demand in Spain, the demand for Spanish and European products in the Americas also became hard to keep up with. With the ever-increasing influx of silver bullion the prices in Spain began to rise and the inflation quadrupled the prices of everything within thirty years. In 1556, Martin de Azpilcueta Navarro, a Spanish canon lawyer, writes about the influx of American silver as the cause of the inflation. We see by experience that in France, where coin is scarcer than in Spain, bread, wi ne, cloth, and labour are worth much less. And even in Spain, in times when money was scarcer, saleable goods and labour were given for very much less than after the uncovering of the Indies, which flooded the country with gold and silver. The reason for this is that money is worth more where and when it is scarce than where and when it is abundant. Along with this, the Spanish king Philip II spent more money on out office enterprises to worsen his countries debt. When needing to pay his debt to other countries, he also paid in silver bullion spreading the inflation to the rest of Europe. The discovery of the Americas led Europe to inflation and increased prices and Spain to almost complete debt by the seventeenth century. Besides silver and gold, the native people of the Americas passed Syphilis on to the Spanish who came to settle there. In five year time, Syphilis had spread to Russia from the European Atlantic coast. Though it could not be proven, Syphilis is thought to have ori ginated in Espaniola because no evidence of Syphilis exists in Europe before 1493.These open sores, boils, and aches in the joints caused excruciating pains to many Europeans due to this quickly widespread venereal disease. The only proven effective way to treat Syphilis was from drinking the boiled bark of the guaiacum tree which only grew in Espaniola. Though no exact numbers were calculated for Syphilis it could not be compared to the death tolls that the European diseases left on the Indian populations. In a period of one hundred thirty years, something like 95 percent of all Native Americans died of disease. That number is far greater than experts (until recently) had ever suspected. The Native Americans who survived the plagues were, of course, completely demoralized and depressed by this horrendous loss of their loved ones, of their lifestyle, and of their ancient culture. (Bib 2. ) The 95 percent population loss of the Natives was staggering compared to probably one percent death caused by Syphilis. Thus though Syphilis was a negative consequence of European expansion it proved minor compare to the Indigenous peoples loss due to European disease. Besides new crops and animals the indigenous people were introduced to new religions, medicaments and ways of life that helped better themselves.Christianity was introduced to the indigenous people thanks to very ardent Catholicism from the Spanish and Portuguese. These Christians taught of love, equality and a heaven after death for those who acted well on earth. For many indigenous people this religion called to them and they were win overed. Those who did not convert voluntarily were either forced to convert or killed. The native people actually became very passionate about this religion and even followed religious doctrines more closely than the Spanish conquistadors. The natives began to spread peace treaty and love as a bigger doctrine than territory fighting which shows how religion was a positive out come from European expansion. New technology and medicine helped more effectively cure the local people and brought new light to the topic. In Pre-Colombian times the Indian populations would come to the ailing and stay by their side through illness thus probably catching the illness themselves, the Europeans taught to isolate the sick and better medicines to treat them. The lives that new medicines saved in the Americas is immeasurable just probably still do not compare to the lives lost from European diseases. New technologies such as guns, steel and sailing equipment helped build stronger weapons than the ones previously feature by Indians, and a new material from which objects could be made. Very strong steel could be used to make protection from swords and swords themselves thus fortifying indigenous peoples efficacy to make weapons, protect themselves, and hunt. Many thousands of things brought from Europe helped make indigenous life better such as candles to light the night and paper so typography and language could be better developed. Though much understated there were many positive outcomes from European expansion to the indigenous people of the Americas and even a few negative outcomes for the Europeans themselves. More often than not, when talking about the European expansion into America, the Europeans seem to get much better rewards from their expansion. And they actually did. They reaped much high rewards from their conquest of the Americas than the indigenous people, yet it cannot be forgotten that both peoples had multiple sides to their gains and losses due to European expansion. Factors Which Affect Decision Implementation Essay

Correct conclusivenesss, the two previous papers elaborately developed, asshole be arrived at only if the requisite process of ponderously putting many influencing instruments in perspective is observed. Since errors in decision-making can end up cosmos costly both for the society and its stakeholders alike, it has been seen that the use of critical thinking has proven to be essential in guiding decision makers in choosing the best options that leave behind supply best results. But if one were to think that arriving at a logical and well-thought out decision ends the entire process of decision-making, one definitely takes the heartbreaking path of frustrating the process all together. A correct decision, one may argue, only proves to be beneficial to a company or nerve when its capital punishment would translate the rigors of critical analyses into tangible results. Langdon, if only to mention, argues along the same line of thought. He maintains, Decision makers pull up stak es never leave the point of the decision without thinking about the steps necessary to implement the decision successfully (Langdon, 2001, p. 15). Ethical Implications and Other Factors Affecting Implementation of Decision The previous discussion was adequate to zero in on the viable options that may gleaned from the map drawn to function BAE Systems establish greater presence in the island of Kava.It may be insolent to be reminded of the decisions that were suggested hitherto first, the company needs not only to sustain its existing accounts, but also to set up new client-accounts done done aggressive advertisement and in-shore sales campaign so as to ensure that the sale of its products is commensurate with its desired expansion rate second, it needs to see done the creation of an efficient and result-generating human workforce and third, it also is imperative that it should create a larger warehouse, if not an adjacent processing plant in the island, so as to meet the demand s of the market It is noteworthy to mention that there are certain risks attached to the cited options. The purpose why the last paper identified them is to throw out inform the decision maker of the resulting benefits and costs that must be anticipated in the event of making the decision. However, to outline the varying cistrons that may affect the implementation of any decision which, if only to mention, concerns greatly the company and its stakeholders is another area that must also be carefully looked at. Surely, the three above-cited options will generate ebbs of electrical shock for the company in general. Two major factors can determine the success of the implementation of the suggested paths the internal coherence of the decision itself, and the external receptivity of the stakeholders involved. The first factor pertains to the logic from which any decision is drawn and this has already constituted a large portion of the previous studies. Every decision, if only to repea t, is arrived at after a ponderous circumscription of the problems at hand, and the generous gathering of facilitative facts to throw light into ones judgment. If the problems were well stated, chances are, the solutions are going to be suited. The next factor is however different. This time, one has to consider other areas that affect the success rate of the decision.Roozen, De Pelsmacker and Bostyn return identified some of them the influence of stakeholders, organizational commitment, personal values, goals of the organization and socio demographic characteristics of individuals, among others (2001, p. 87). In the light of the three suggested decision paths for BAE Systems, what Roozen (and company) points are certainly of paramount importance. For instance, since the companys goal to establish a greater presence in Kava is heavily dependent on the expansion of its new sales accounts, the decision to equally expand the workforce and to create newer intra-island processing plants must be leveled against the impact such will have on the stakeholders e. g. , will the company owners allow for an increased budget allocation to defray the expansion cost?, will the company managers be willing to oversee difficult but potential market areas within the island? , will the commitment of the newly hired sales good example be aggressive enough to meet expectations? , or will the vision of the company itself be willing to risk so much for a open of investment which will come later on? It is very important to note that BAE Systems vision is intricately knitted with the amount of available resources the company has, or is willing to risk for investment purposes. One way or another, the welfare of both the company and its stakeholders is the friction force that shall determine how fast or sluggish the implementation of the decisions pertinent to BAE Systems expansion in Kava island would be.Key to the companys success in Kava is also anchored on the ethical implication s the decisions have on its stakeholders. In order to clarify the moral basis for sticking into a decision, Rodgers and Gago has sought to identify many differing ethical motives in a need they conducted. They suggest that there are at least six pathways that justify, and thus serve a basis for a particular decision to be act psychological egoism, deontology, relativist, utilitarian, virtue ethics, and ethics of care philosophy (Rodgers & Gago, 2001, pp. 358-359). Without having to go through their respective details, it may be good to note that the suggested options for BAE Systems are largely motivated by the utilitarian pathway. What does this mean? This means that the company which seeks to expand a venture must be seen primarily in terms of its ability to be the risk. Thus, in a utilitarian approach, the company is more defined by a consequentialist attitude in decision-making policies, in that it tries to see to it that any decision would generate the greatest good (for) th e greatest number of people (Rodgers & Gago, 2001, p. 359). Conclusion One may properly recall that, in the Business Scenario, Alex once quipped that economics is what drives the company to further expand its presence in an island of Kava. In many ways, what he said was correct, if not telling. The overarching reason why one needs to surmount the evidently impossible difficulties, by identifying all the contributing factors relative to the companys vision, is indeed driven by economics. But having economics alone as the touching force behind the desired expansion of a certain company may not capture the entire picture. Any decision driven by economics therefore, one must remember, must also be tempered by the opportunities it creates for the involved stakeholders, and the ethical implications it generates seen from their perspective. Critical thinking, as always, can always help ensure that these seemingly non-economic aspects of doing business are given their due importance.

France vs. England 17th Century Essay

There are mainly two types of governments that emerged during the seventeenth century. almost of the political growing took place in France and England. Absolute monarchy took over throughout France while constitutionalism, or parliamentary monarchy, was becoming popular in England between 1640 and 1780. Frances direct monarchy developed because of the nobles and kings focused on the concept of divine right. England, on the other hand, developed through the businessmen and landowners trying to prevent the central parsimony of political power. These governments grasped the attention of philosophers, leaders, and churches. Eventually, both would develop and influence the modern world today in Europe and the Americas. France was very popular at the time for creating the cerebration of kings ruling by divine right. This perception was that the ruler of a specific country was put on that point by God. It was their divine right to be there because they were performing the work of G od.The kings subjects were non to question the decisions of the king because it was Gods will and who can question God? King Louis xiv was the most influential towards divine rights. He expected to be treated like a god because he was His representative on earth. Louis XIV was back up by Bishop Jacques-Bnigne Bossuet, who was the leader of French Catholicism in the seventeenth century. He used examples from the New Testament of rulers who were barely answerable to God. Popes had insisted since the medieval times that they could only be judged by God. Bossuet and Louis XIV then argued that only God had the right to judge kings. In England, there was a lot of turmoil between the reign monarchs and large landowners. English monarchs tried to copy France with their financial system that did notdepend heavily on the estates, diets, or assemblies of nobles. By doing this, it helped to grant French monarchs unconditional rule. While easily achieved in France, the English monarchy fai led royally. James I of England alike tried to achieve the divine right of kings. He wanted to lessen parliaments power and called on them for help as little as possible. Without the help of parliament, James I had to find other means of revenue. He rapidly angered his subjects because of Englands inadequate income he threatened nobles, large landowners, and those of commercial wealth for money.James I and the Duke of Buckingham also sold royal patronage to the highest bidders. Thesewere more or less of the key factors that led to the distrust of the English monarchs. In contrast, King Louis XIV gained the trust of his people and nobles with ease. He would entertain nobles at Versailles, his personal twenty-six acre home. He would then grant them tax exemptions, wealth, and social standing if they supported him. The French nobility found the best way to protect and promote their interests was to support the reigning monarch. Instead of depending on the wealth of the nobles, he ma de the nobles dependent on him. He proclaimed that, the state is me, or in other words, that France existed for him. Louis XIV also promoted that there should be one king, one law, one faith. This helped him gain the loyalty of the Roman Catholics who wanted to restore Catholicism as the prominent religion in Europe. English monarchs also botched in establishing absolute monarchy because of religion. Protestant became the leading religion among the English. Protestants believed that Sunday should be full of religious observances and very little vacuous or recreation. James I believed that recreation and sports were innocent activities and permitted them to be played on Sunday, which infuriated the Protestant religions. Because of a few other miss happenings, a Protestant movement known as Puritanism was established. This was a nonpolitical force that opposed absolutism and sought to limit political authority and at last raise it. There were also Puritans in France that tried to re bel but their efforts were crushed by Louis XIV and the Roman Catholics who enforced religious uniformity. England also differed from France because of the creation of the lineup of Rights. After the Glorious Revolution, when James II fled to France, England put William and Mary of Orange on the throne. Though they were the new reigning monarchs, Parliament issued the Bill of Rights that limited powers of the monarchy and guaranteed the cultivated liberties of the English classes. William and Mary signed the Bill of Rights that would let them rule only by the consent of Parliament. From the beginning of their reign in 1689, they brought more economic and armed services resources into balance with the French and would eventually top France as the powerhouse of Europe. In Comparing French and English political development, the beliefs of Thomas Hobbes and John Locke perfectly elaborate the differences between absolute and parliamentary governments. Hobbes was a strict supporter to absolutism and complete control. Locke was a supporter of constitutionalismand protecting the natural rights of humans. Both of these philosophers, being in all opposite in view from the other, is the classic battle that has gone on forever and all the same exists today the fight for power and the fight for freedom. Thomas Hobbes was a very talented and depressing political philosopher. He had discouragingly low view on values and the natural state of humans. Hobbes believed that the human race was so wicked and power stricken that they were cast out of paradise into the earth. To Hobbes, as expressed in the Leviathan, human nature was based on physical sensations and impulse for power. One of his famous sayings was, life is war of every man against every man. This is why he thought that human beings must be controlled by absolute authority. The individuals should be told every choice to hit and constrained by one supreme ruler that holds all power. Hobbes thought that rulers sh ould have unlimited power because, the dangers of tumult are always greater than those of tyranny. John Locke, known as the defender of moderate liberty and toleration, had almost the exact opposite views as Hobbes. Locke viewed human beings in their natural state as being creatures of goodwill and reason. He believed that humans were divine creatures put on earth by God to learn from it and make it useful. Locke wrote the Essay Concerning Human Understanding that described the mind as being a blank slate at birth. As a person grows the development of who they become is based on their surroundings and those around them. Hobbes idea that humans are all evil is rebuked by Locke saying that people are not born evil.Their surroundings, experiences, and influences are what develop evil tendencies. Locke also wrote the Two Treatises of Government. The first described his distaste of absolutism. With too much power, he argued that there would be no freedom for anyone in the condition of a bsolute monarchy. The second treatise he described the natural and God given rights of humans. Among them were the natural rights of life, liberty, and property. Those ideas were used throughout history and in the Declaration of Independence. Another belief of his was that governments exist to protect liberty and the natural state of people not to overcome them. Locke was a very influential philosopher who greatly impressed many future generations with his political philosophical insight.Overall, the development of both absolute and parliamentary governments greatly affected Europe. The battles between France and Englandto have a immutable government caused chaos throughout both countries. If anything, the Europeans learned many ways how not to run a country. Both countries and the development of differing monarchies set an example for many other countries. France created a strong absolute government as an example for rulers all over the world on how to have complete control of peo ple. England eventually came around and with the help of the people created parliamentary government. The concept of constitutionalism was even a model for constructing the American administration. Currently the battle between power and freedom still goes on and will continue as long as there are people like Thomas Hobbes and John Locke who argue for their beliefs.

Benefits of partnership of a community group

In the recent years we have witnessed a contract known as Community Benefit Agreement that was signed in the ground forces between friendship groups and company owners which requires the business owners to provide certain services to the local community or the vicinity while on the other turn the community supports the businesses or volition not in any way oppose them (Cnaan & Milofsky, 2007). A study reveals that when the community is more involved in the talks procedure, they will be able to tackle the problems to present a debate for all parts of an affected community. At the spirit of the community benefits schemes is partnership building. According to the agreement, in that location are various benefits a community will derive from a business operating in the vicinity. They include good working conditions, local hiring schemes, affordable housing allowances, better remuneration packages, on job training programs, space will be set aside for other small organizations, commu nity centres, churl care schools, enhance erection of parks and sporting amenities and giving financial support to community group programs.Benefits that a community group whitethorn accrue from a company/business through partnership Taking a case in Sydney we find that a recreation field perpetration of Rankin School of the Narrows in IONA being one of the beneficiaries from the Sydney Tar Ponds way through a strategy that was introduced known as Local Economic Benefits (LEB). Sydney Tar Ponds Agency is an agency that deals with stabilizing, solidifying and containing the contaminated materials to clean up the environment and the cleaned up space to be used for recreational purposes.Sydney Tar Ponds Agency, through the LEB program, supports farms mission contestants and contractors to promote local community activities. LEB involves various operations such as local employment, improvement of local proficiency sets, promoting local community projects and drawing new citizens to pass by way local communities. An important section that will be checked out is developing an outdoor rink, a young and adults green activity area which will allow those who have no space to plant at home to have a tend, for the young ones it will provide education on plants and how they grow.As fundraising efforts were current for the various phases, the committee explored many ways of generating much-needed financial support. Members in the Sydney Tar Ponds Agency have testified that the strategy had helped them develop the outdoor rink that is helping them to give back to the community. This helps the community to grow in positive, healthy directions (Gale Group, 1988). Through the establishment of the outdoor rink for Rankin School of the Narrows in IONA, there will be a lot of motivation in the part of the learners as they will be able to learn extra curriculum activities such as small garden farming. It will also give individuals work to do thus avoiding idleness which coul d promote immorality amongst the youths. This will develop the youngsters skills and talents that could be of great help to them in future. These small gardens will also add to the countrys aesthetic value thus preserving the splendour of a nation. Conclusion In order to diversity a triumphant community benefit agreement, it is vital to classify and retain a coalition, facilitate and expertise on a shared agenda, Collins & Porras, 2002).It is accordingly important that the government empowers the community on its rights so as to improve the bargaining power of the community. We find that there are organizations which merely do anything for the community because there are no efforts to demand their contribution to the community. On the other hand the community groups should support the operations of the organization to form that mutual descent that will promote the introduction of other benefits (Demetrios E. Healthy Grief Essay

The handout of a family member and/or loved one can vagabond someone on an emotional roller coaster. Whether it is an expected or unexpected injustice, the emotional serve well of dealing with the grief could be the same. With an expected loss, loved ones atomic number 18 able to prepare themselves for what is to list. An unexpected loss could bring more emotions into the grieving process. This paper will discuss the grieving process by Kubler-Ross, the story of farm out, and the substance Muslims deal with death and dying. While some people focus on the sadness of losing a loved one, others try and find the positive in the any situation. To grieve the loss of a loved one, many would say that they feel a lot of different indescribable emotions. Shock, disbelief, emotional pain, anger, and sadness are in all some emotions that people feel while grieving. Kubler-Ross developed a five step grieving process that one should experience and move through so they can move on to a hap py life (Lecture 5 Notes). The process itself is denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance (Lecture 5 Notes). It is easy for a person to not recollect that a loved one has passed on as begin the grieving process (Lecture 5 Notes).Once the denial has processed and the loss has become a reality, it is normal to get angry and ask why did this happen? Bargaining with God is the next step in the grieving process. Trying to make a deal with God to try and bring back a loved one gives a person hope that their loved one will come back. Once reality has set in, depression is the next step (Lecture 5 Notes). This is when the feelings of hopelessness set in, making it difficult for a person to pass this set up (Lecture 5 Notes). The last stage of the grieving process is acceptance (Lecture 5 Notes). This is the stage that helps a person emotionally move on from grieving the loss of a loved one. Life goes becomes a new type of normal with the memory of the loved one instead of the having the loved one there (Lecture 5 Notes). In the book of parentage, Satan challenges Jobs assent and love for God, with Gods permission (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). Satan does everything in his power to get Job to not only doubt God, but to aver him as well (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). Satan killed his ten children and destroyed his spiritedstock and servants (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). Job focused more on God and praised him as he mourned loss of his children and wealth (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). Satan then tried one last time by filling Jobs body with sores (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). The doubt of his wife and the negativity of his colleagues never gave him a change of heart. Job remained organized religionful to God, never doubted Him (he doubted himself at times), and still praised Him (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). God eventually replenished Jobs wealth and blessed him with more children (Study Bible-NLT, 2008). Job grieved in a very healthy way. He did not blame others and he did not curse God. He tried to find the good in every bad situation. One religion that differs from Christianity and western civilizations way of grieving the loss of a loved one is the Islamic religion. With death and dying, Muslims believe that there is life after death (Ross, 2001). It is believed that believers of the religion must practice the five pillars of Islam and live a righteous life on earth in order to have a different afterlife than those unbelievers (Ross, 2001). People of the Islamic religion must mourn as they prepare for a quick burial (Ross, 2001). A loved one should be buried the twenty-four hours of death or the day after, not any later (Ross, 2001). In public, it is not of their norm for women to show any emotion at a time like this (Ross, 2001).Finding bliss in the midst of losing a loved one can be trying. But like Job in the Bible, joy could come quicker if faith is not lost. Grieving is a challenging time to stay positive. Making the attempt to stay positive helps pus h one through the grieving process without getting stuck in one of the stages for too long. A good way to find joy is to continue to praise God and not to lose faith in Him.In closing, re-reading the book of Job in the Holy Bible has reminded me of how important it is to praise God in the midst of a storm. The loss of a loved one is tragic for anyone and grieving is a natural process in life. But if the focus stays on praising God and not losing faith, that grieving process can turn into a healing process and it is possible to find peace in the midst of grieving. God always has a rainbow waiting at the end of eachstorm, it just depends how long it takes for you to play in the rain before you get there.

Managerial ethics †term paper

Its the sure looks overbearing in this way, as part of the deal, Sara lee side Corp. loaded up the apparel maker with billions in new debt, then paid itself a big, plentiful dividend money itll use to trim its own debt and buy back shares. Hanes, by contrast, forget start sp regenerateliness as a public company with a bond rating in junk military position and a debt load so onerous some worry it wont be able to invest tolerable in its well-known clothing brands.Financial engineering that has more than in common with the world of leveraged buyouts than with unified spin-offs. And at first blush, from Sara Lees perspective, the deal makes sense. Why should executives rely solely on the fickle stock securities industry to recognize the worth of Hanes as a stand-alone company when they screwing grab some low temperature cash now and put it to work immediately?Managerial ethics would mean many things positive about what is good in the executive managers that manage effectively . These effective managers showed successful operations in of the melodic theme Examining the questions of why individuals behave the way they do and if there is a natural impulse to do well. This will discusses such issues as whether an individual, pursuing his or her own self-interest, can improve the general welfare and whether raft have an innate mistrust that leads them to do well.In coming to the conclusion that the pursuit of self-interest can produce a lot of good if it is balanced with a bit of societal guidance, the author brings to ignition issues of corporate governance, performance pay, legal and monetary incentives, and other forms of regulation (Pounds, William F. http//sloanreview.mit.edu). It is in this aspect, it points out, that intuition, rather than a more empirical approach, can best be put to good use. Then argument stated that intuition has been lacking from the more utilitarian view of economics and management and that, generally speaking, a blend of tw ain approaches is optimal. Ethical approaches in BusinessSara Lee executives declined to comment for negative story. A Sara Lee spokesman says the company believes Haness aim of debt is appropriate. A Hanes spokesman says the company generates enough free cash to fund investment as well. The subject of descent ethics is complex. Fair-minded people sometimes have significant differences of opinion regarding what constitutes honourable behavior and how ethical decisions should be made. This article discusses four approaches that business owners can use to consider ethical questions. The method you opt may not suit everyone. Hopefully, by considering the alternatives, you will be able to make decisions that are right for you.The utilitarian approach to ethical decision-making focuses on taking the action that will result in the great good for the greatest number of people. Considering our example of employing low-wage workers, under the utilitarian approach you would try to determi ne whether development low-wage foreign workers would result in the greatest good. For example, if you use low-wage foreign workers in response to price competition, you talent retain your market share, enabling you to avoid laying off your U.S. employees, and perhaps fifty-fifty allowing you to pay your U.S. employees higher(prenominal) wages. If you refuse to use low-wage foreign workers regardless of the competition, you may be unable to compete. This could result in layoffs of your U.S. workers and even your foreign workers, for whom the relatively low wages may be essential income. On the other hand, victimisation low-wage workers may tend to depress the wages of most workers, thus reducing almost everyones beat of nutrition and depressing their ability to purchase the very goods you and others are trying to sell. The honourable rights approach concerns itself with moral principles, regardless of the consequences. Under this view, some actions are simply considered to be r ight or wrong. From this standpoint, if paying super low wages is immoral, your desire to meet the competition and keep your business afloat is not a sufficient justification. Under this view, you should close down your business if you cannot operate it by paying your workers a living wage, regardless of the actions of your competitors.ReferencePounds, William . Implementing Strategies: Managing Technology Essay

Project Portfolio focus (PPM) is a new discipline that is guiding makeups in setting goals and objectives, incorporating strategies and products, and making sure that course service are being delivered. PPM allows beau mondes to select, prioritize, optimize, and control all the projects in the organization based on many different parameters. PPM has been used in many IT project settings, but has recently been used by organizations to manage any portfolio of projects. In order to for PPM to be an effective tool, organizations need to pose what issues need to be considered when selecting projects to implement dodge and what parameters need to be used to control the actual projects. The main issue that an organization needs to consider when selecting projects is alignment with long-term company goals. Often, projects are prioritized by internal political need which passel quickly misalign what needs to be done compared to the company long-term goals. It is not to give voice that t hat the needs of certain melody units should be ignored, but PPM allows a company to . . . prioritize its mental imagerys for the good of the business . . . (Paul, 2006). Other issues that need to be considered in selecting projects are categorizing projects into those that run the business, those that grow the business, and those that whitethorn transform the business (Paul, 2006). Categorizing projects lets senior management change the project mix if revenue growth is a top precession or if a change in the business model is imminent.Having project flexibility is essential when implementing strategy within an organization. Senior managers can in like manner use the categorizing of projects to situate the incoming demands from the business units and determine the dexterity of the organization to deliver real value back to the business units or customers. PPM is also concerned with not just the actual project completion, but monitor the project once it is complete for long-ter m long suit and success. The follow-up provided by PPM ordain help senior management and future project leaders determine best practices and focuses for the future and long-term strategies. PPM is able to define project parameters to control projects by long-term monitoring of completed projects. Parameters that need to be defined within each project are cost, resource availability, resource allocation and workload, time to market, cost reduction value, revenue generation, scope, and time-line to complete. The parameters need to be tracked in real-time for effective project management and portfolio management. PPM is able to . . . provide continuous checks and evaluations of a project throughout its lifecycle. . . (Gharehmani, 2006). This allows PPM to evaluate projects or products based on real-time information and not outdated spreadsheets. The individual parameters can also be selected based on the particular need of the company with a certain project. For example, if a company is looking for a certain time to market versus the time-line to complete, PPM can use real-time information from preceding projects to easily and accurately predict if the product will be released in the time frame desired. Categorizing projects can also be used as an effective means of controlling projects. For example, senior management may request that only projects that align with growing the business and revenue generation are to be worked on for a particular period of time depending on the business need in the specified time.PPM is a growing science that is being increasingly used to manage any portfolio of projects. In order for PPM to be effective, organizations need to define what issues need to be controlled to implement a particular strategy. Organizations also need to define the parameters that are to be used to control the projects. Without defining the issues and parameters related to project or portfolio management, the company will not be effective in managing what projects will ultimately lead to long-term success for the correct organization.

Barnes & Noble has beefed up their online presence while reducing their bod of stores as well. Amazons vision of the future has more to do with distribution than anything else. Amazon is doing everything in their power to create a shopping experience similar to going to an actual store including the second base gratification of receiving your purchased goods right as your purchase them. Amazon is moving towards an incredibly automated distribution channel that will reduce time to consumer through revolutionary technology. One of these technologies is drones that will fly purchased goods to a consumers home and drops them on the front step. Both companies understan d the profit potential of the industry and are taking steps to capitalize on profit opportunities.Company Success StoriesBoth Barnes & Noble and Amazon.com call for go through great success in their years in business. Barnes & Noble originated in 1873 and opened its first bookstore in New York City in 1917. In the 1970s they became the first bookstore to advertise on television, as well as the first bookstore to discount New York Times bestsellers at 40% off. From 1992 through 2003, Barnes & Noble released a series of classics for adults and children underthe imprint Barnes & Noble Classics Collection. Barnes & Noble stores are also known for their Starbucks cafes, where people often sit and relax with a cup of coffee or a snack. Undoubtedly, Barnes & Nobles greatest success comes from the nook, their electronic book reader, introduced in November 2009. The NOOKs biggest competition for the tablet market comes from the Amazon Kindle Fire, and Apples iBooks for iPhone, iPad and i Touch.Although only in business 17 years, Amazon.com has experienced great success and is now the worlds largest retailer. Amazon has separate retail websites for the undermentioned countries United States, Canada, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Japan, and China, with international shipping to certain other countries for some of its products. Amazon.com sells a variety of retail goods online including books, jewelry, baby items, tools, software, toys, and is a huge third party reseller. Amazon patriarchal membership is very frequent and for an annual fee, a user can join, which entitles them to dispense with two-day shipping on eligible purchases. Amazon Prime also provides Amazon Instant Video and access to the Kindle Owners Lending Library. Amazons greatest success to date is the introduction of its e-reader, Kindle, in November 2007 and the Kindle Fire in family line 2011. Since 2007, Amazon has released multiple versions of the Kindle e-reader and two versio ns of the Kindle Fire. Its biggest competitors in the tablet market are the Barnes & Noble NOOK and the Apple iPad being used in conjunction with the Kindle app.Past ChallengesThe challenges that these two companies have faced, and continue to face, are the digital landscape and competition. Barnes & Noble became the last hope for bookstores after the collapse of Borders. Barnes & Noble is now the last major bookstore chain standing. The company is in constant competition with e-commerce sites, e-readers and tablets. It is honest to say that Barnes & Nobles primary competitor is Amazon. Barnes & Noble began to utilize their website, offering more titles and including free shipping for members. After Amazon launched its tablet, the Kindle, Barnes & Noble was forced to step up in the digital landscape. It created the NOOK and the NOOK Bookstore. Several generations later, the NOOK has come a long way in itsevolution. Now it has develop a tablet with color, a built in light, Internet searching and application capabilities. Its newest tablet comes in high definition. While the NOOK looks more appealing than it did in previous years, one thing stands in its way of success, which is price. Amazons Kindle, is priced anywhere from $69-$100 cheaper than the NOOK.This is not to say Amazon doesnt have its challenges either. Amazon has made a name for itself globally, however it still has competition with other e-commerce sites like e-Bay. EBay allows several(prenominal) sellers to auction essentially anything they want for a fee. Amazon has limitations on what individual sellers can sell collectible to competition with other retailer partnerships with Amazon. However, according to a recent Forrester report, 30 percent of all online shoppers drop dead at Amazon to research products as opposed to Google or eBay (Savitz, 2012). Another competitor Amazon faces is Apple. The super coveted Apple iPad is in fierce competition with Amazons Kindle. While the iPad is more ex pensive than the Kindle, Apple fans might point out that the iPad has far more tablet-optimized apps, selections for 4GLTE connectivity, and is the thinner and lighter device of the two. However, Amazons Kindle is a cheaper alternative for those who cannot afford an iPad or even the NOOK.Future challengesAny company trying to survive in todays economy will undoubtedly face challenges. The key to success lays in predicting these challenges and implementing strategies to overcome them. The places where Amazon finds opportunity seem to be the same places where Barnes & Noble faces challenges.Firstly, Amazon continues to make it very attractive for authors to self-publish their titles with their publishing services including, the Kindle Direct Publishing option for online books, and the CreateSpace option for print books. Barnes & Noble does offer its own self-publishing service, PubIt, but its services are only offered for e-books, not print. In fact, 28% of the top-selling titles on Kindle are not even available on the NOOK (McIlroy, 2012). If Barnes & Noble wants to compete it will have to expandits self-publishing services and offer better incentives to authors. Another challenge that Barnes & Noble faces is its lack of an international presence. The fact that Amazon operates in so many countries worldwide is a somber challenge for Barnes & Noble. The Kindle is available internationally, but the NOOK is not. The NOOK is one of Barnes & Nobles most successful products. Therefore, it would seem logical to expand the consider of locations where this product can be purchased. However, it still dust unclear as to when and if Barnes & Noble plans to expand to international markets. One challenge that Amazon could face whitethorn be the law. Since it allows an unlimited number of people to sell on the site, from all over the world, it is difficult to oversee every single product that is sold under the Amazon.com brand. In order to prevent future lawsuits it is cr itical that Amazon.com employs a highly skilled legal team, and closely monitors its sellers and their products.RecommendationWe have found that Barnes & Noble and Amazon may appear to rivals but this appearance is only visible on the surface. With further examination of the facts, it is sheer that one company is far more successful than the other. We have concluded that Amazon.com is that company. These are the main factors that have contributed to our conclusions Amazon has more appealing future growth with the implementation of drone shipping. Amazons success of the Kindle compared to Barnes & Nobles NOOK. Amazon sells internationally. Barnes & Noble only operates in the US. Amazon allows an unlimited number of sellers to do business on its site. Barnes & Noble restricts its number of sellers to 200. Amazon.com is more attractive and rewarding for self-publishing which is set to pass a leading role in the future of industry. Amazon has the capital to sell its products cheaper t han Barnes & Noble. Therefore, with the evidence provided in this report, we have determined that the most secure investment opportunity of these two companies is Amazon.com. Based on real performance, and the opportunities for future success that were outlined in this report, it is now clear that Barnes & Noble simply cannot compete withAmazon.coms current success and future potential.Works CitedAmazon.com. ethical motive Paper - Essay ExampleThis is obviously the wrong direction that the prison system is taking and represents an unethical way in which the offenders argon being treated. Although the conditions in these prisons meet federal and local standards, the overall bring out of human rights and equality is fundamentally flawed due to the fact that the people who are being locked onward are not viewed with delight in to how they should be punished or reformed rather, they are only viewed with respect to the overall level of profitability that can be extracted from the state, regional, or federal government for their tenure in the penal system. The following analysis will discuss this to some length and highlight the unethical disposition as well as some prescriptions for change that could be instituted in order to set out a positive impact upon the current criminal justice system. The ethical issue that exists is the fact that the prisons and penal institutions deep down the joined States are supposed to be interested only in punishing and rehabilitating the criminal. Instead, what is taking institutionalise throughout the country is a situation in which the prison complex itself is making a ample amount of money based upon the individuals that it incarcerates. As one might expect, this means that there will be little if any decoct upon seeking to rehabilitate the criminal instead, the focus is upon only trying to distend the size of the prisons so that a further and further level of profitability is made. There have of note been people complaining about the criminal justice system in the United States for many days however, the fact of the matter is that the current for profit criminal justice system is one that does not principal the improvement of society or the reintegration of the offender. As such, the primary ethical/moral issue that one moldiness consider relates to the issue that has evolved from what this author will deem incarceration for profit. Although few individuals in the United States are aware of this practice, the fact of the matter is that it has grown from an isolated incidence to a multi-million dollar a year industry. The central issue can be explained as a system whereby overburdened municipalities cannot straightway afford the massive expense that is called for in order to build a new penitentiary system. As a way to bridge this gap while making a substantial profit, private firms cypher into the equation and offer the municipality a joint venture which is oftentimes hard to resist. These firms offer to front the essential capital to build the facility as well as staff it with private contracting hostage firms. The catch then comes as the municipality agrees to an extended lease of the facility. Although at face value this may seem an ingenious way for a private firm to work to alleviate the strains that a municipality may have with relation to prison overcrowding, it is however slightly more sinister than one would at first presume. referable to the fact that a private firm now has stake in the criminal justice system, a system that arguably the state and the state alone should have prevue over, the interests of rehabilitation and reform are placed as secondary to overall profit (Brickner et al. 11). Such a situation is counter to the truly foundations of what the criminal justice system is supposed to provide to society. In this way, incarceration has become the primary focus of policy makers and local leaders whereas the needs of those incarcerated
